There is no question that the DOP San Marzano tomato is the most fabled tomato in the world. The allowable production area is very restricted and the demand far exceeds total output. Unfortunately, this has led to a great deal of fraud, both in and outside of Italy. Outside, tomatoes grown in far-flung fields are called San Marzano. Inside, Italian packers have been labeling standard Italian Peeled tomatoes as San Marzano. In 2010 Italian authorities confiscated 1,470 tons of tomatoes illegally labeled as DOP San Marzano. Food Arts magazine reported in 2011 that 95% of the tomatoes sold in the US as DOP San Marzano are, in fact, fraudulently labeled. We have taken this very seriously and are committed to carefully selecting our producers and tomatoes to be sure that we truthfully represent them. Any tomato packed in large n. 10 cans will most likely not be a DOP San Marzano.
